On Aug. 18, Comcast activated a motion detection feature on millions of its newer home routers.
WiFi Motion is a free feature that turns newer Xfinity Gateways into motion sensors by detecting interruptions to the WiFi signal of the wireless network and sending a notification through the Xfinity app, according to TechCrunch [1].
Comcast unveiled the feature as part of Xfinity Shield, a home security platform built around the WiFi network, and it turns the leased gateway into a motion detector at no extra charge, according to a ZeroHedge report [2].
Comcast said WiFi Motion works “without recording video, capturing images, or identifying individuals,” according to the report [2].
The company’s terms state that Comcast “may disclose information generated by your WiFi Motion to third parties without further notice” in connection with law enforcement investigations, the report said. Comcast said a typical customer has roughly 36 devices connected to their WiFi.
WiFi Motion works because a human body moving through a room disturbs the signal field between the gateway and stationary connected devices, such as a printer or a game console, according to Comcast’s rollout materials. The feature is opt-in and, according to Comcast, does not track phones or reach through WiFi extenders.
Comcast’s rollout materials stated that those limitations are choices made in software, not limitations of the technology itself.
The detection method relies on signals that have been part of WiFi networks for more than a decade.
Researchers at Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) presented findings in November at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security in Taipei describing how the method exploits beamforming feedback information (BFI), housekeeping signals that every connected device sends back to the router so it can aim its transmissions efficiently. Beamforming has shipped with consumer WiFi hardware since WiFi 5.
Because the feedback travels unencrypted, anyone within radio range can read it and, using a trained model, convert it into a crude radio image of whoever is present, the researchers said.
The person being identified does not need to be carrying a device at all; it is enough that other people’s nearby phones and laptops are talking to the router, the researchers said. “This technology turns every router into a potential means for surveillance,” KIT’s Julian Todt said.
WiFi-based sensing is advancing in other research as well: a study by the University of Porto revealed the potential for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface technology to manipulate WiFi signals, allowing for accurate detection and rendering of human activity with over 90% accuracy, according to a NaturalNews.com report [3].
The proliferation of wirelessly connected devices in homes has made such signal analysis possible; Internet of Things (IoT) devices, sensors, and components are used to send and receive data and communicate among themselves wirelessly, according to the book “Optimizing health monitoring systems with wireless technology” [4].
KIT researchers reported 99.5% accuracy in re-identifying participants in a study of 197 people, regardless of viewing angle or how the person walked, according to the ZeroHedge report [2].
The system works only after it has been trained on a person’s radio signature, and the 99.5% figure applies to re-identifying enrolled participants, not identifying a stranger cold, the report noted. The report stated that the limitation disappears once anyone with sufficient reach starts collecting signatures at scale.
The researchers tested mitigations, including cutting the frequency of beamforming reports, and found that accuracy barely changed even at heavily degraded sample rates, according to the report. Encrypting the feedback would require rewriting the WiFi standard and breaking backward compatibility with billions of deployed devices, the researchers said [9].
In 2025, the IEEE ratified 802.11bf, an amendment that deliberately builds sensing capabilities into WiFi, including presence detection, fall detection, and breathing monitoring, and early implementations are already appearing in silicon, the report stated.
Wireless devices have been collecting personal data in homes for years; one early device, the Withings WiFi body scale, records weight, fat mass, lean muscle mass, and body mass index, according to Eric Topol’s book “The Creative Destruction of Medicine” [5].
Comcast’s terms state that the company may disclose information generated by WiFi Motion to third parties without further notice in connection with law enforcement investigations, the report said [9]. Users pointed out when the feature first appeared that the only complete opt-out is returning the Xfinity router, the report said.
The WiFi Motion feature is opt-in, according to Comcast’s rollout materials.
Comcast’s paid security tier, Xfinity Shield Select, costs $15 per month and adds artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cameras that identify people, pets, packages, and vehicles, according to the report [9]. The free tier’s restraint is a line drawn one product SKU away, the report noted.
Connected home devices have raised privacy questions more broadly; smart home devices that use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to connect into a smart home app collect data from the home environment, according to a NaturalNews.com report titled “Here’s how your smart home technology spies on you day and night” [6].
WiFi-based surveillance operates invisibly, unlike camera-based systems, according to the report. Flock Safety, the license plate reader network that became a flashpoint of anti-surveillance backlash this year, announced guardrails late in August, cutting default data retention from 30 days to seven days and instituting automatic lockouts for abnormal searches, the report said.
Flock said more than 90% of searches are completed within a week. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) called the changes a “thinly veiled PR attempt” built on “largely hollow security promises,” according to the report.
The report said more than 50 agencies and jurisdictions have walked away from Flock contracts since January, and people in multiple states have destroyed cameras outright. “A camera is at least a visible object: it sits on a pole, neighbors notice it, city councils vote on it, and when enough people get angry, it comes down,” the report stated.
CCTV surveillance sensors are installed in many industrial setups and high-risk security areas to monitor and guard against threats, according to the book “Embedded Vision: An Introduction” [7].
The WiFi build-out, by contrast, was finished years ago, one living room, cafe, and office at a time, with nothing on a pole to point at, the report stated.
Comcast’s WiFi Motion converts millions of leased routers into motion sensors, and independent research demonstrates that the same signals can identify individuals, according to the report and related coverage [1]. The company’s data sharing policies and the technical limitations of user controls raise questions about consent and privacy.
Researchers and critics said the progression from an optional feature to a broader surveillance capability warrants continued scrutiny.
